With the installation of the EMIR instrument on the GTC, unrevealed parts of the universe become in reach and revolutionary scientific goals can be set.
JPE developed a crucial module for the EMIR instrument, being the Configurable Slit Unit (CSU). This is a masking unit with a square aperture of340 mmwhich operates in the internal cryogenic environment (77 Kelvin) of EMIR. The CSU creates a configurable pattern of slits which enables the astronomer to select up to 55 individual objects on the sky, from which the light spectrum can be analyzed in parallel.
Main features are:
- Field of view: 340 mmsquare
- number of moving elements: 110
- stroke per element: 275 mm
- positioning accuracy: < 6 mm
- working temperature: 77 Kelvin
